The Reason Why Steve Harvey Had Me Shedding Tears

I attended the Black Enterprise Entrepreneur Summit, in Atlanta, GA., and after about 10 minutes into Steve Harvey’s fireside chat with Butch Graves, CEO of Black Enterprise, Steve had me shedding a few tears.

“In order to get to know a man at 40, you have to understand the boy at 11 years old,” Steve said. Instantly I saw my 11-year-old self and tear one started.

As Steve spoke about his father, he brought out the emotions that I had suppressed all these years --I reflected on my dad and all the life lessons he poured into me as a young boy-- trying to prepare me to be the man I am today.

My father died when I was 11 years old. I had to transition into a man and lost faith in God. “How could a God that loves me take away my father?" This was one of the most traumatic moments in my life.  And it made me take a serious look at myself--Have I dealt with some of those personal issues of loss and forgiveness so I can move on to the next stage of my life?

Steve helped me see that God has, was, and forever will be with me along my journey. I had to be built up from the inside out, to live the plan God has for my life.

This wasn’t just a fireside chat for me, where you sit around taking notes. This was a candid discussion that lit a fire inside of me--between me, my father and God.

Steve, by being open, honest and transparent about his ups and downs, failures, sacrifices, and struggles, was a catalyst that allowed me to do the same with my self and let some things go.

“My father always told me nobody will ever be able to outwork you, said Steve Harvey.”

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Sometimes it’s hard moving towards a vision that no one can see but you. At times you start comparing yourself to others and second-guessing your decisions.

But, no matter how far along other people are on their journey, and what degrees or accomplishments they have, your vision wasn’t given to anyone else but you. Do the work, trust the process.

I had a transformative moment that will help propel me to the next level in my life.

I can’t thanks Steve enough for sharing his story and opening up a path for healing. Ultimately, I hope my story is a source of inspiration for someone else.  Now I can act like a success, think like a success and be a total success.

Here are five jewels Steve dropped during the session:

  • “I couldn't quit because I wanted to make my mom and dad proud”
  • "Once you identify your God-given gift things will begin to open up in  your life."
  • “If your career is not tied to your gift, you’re not going to be happy”
  • “Put your name on it, start owning stuff” -
  • You have to be "HAPPY" with you! Because it makes it easier for the person to LOVE YOU!!
